B.Des Student Portfolio Highlights
At Indus Design School (IDS), Indus University, Ahmedabad, student portfolios are a true reflection of learning, exploration and professional growth. Every Bachelor of Design (B.Des) student develops a comprehensive portfolio that documents their journey from foundation-level exercises to advanced, industry-oriented design projects.
A strong B.Des student portfolio must effectively showcase both the final creative output and the underlying design thinking process, demonstrating professional readiness. The core highlights revolve around documenting the “how”—the systematic approach to solving complex problems. Students must clearly present their journey through research and problem identification, including user studies and competitive analysis, followed by the ideation and conceptualization phase, featuring sketches, wireframes, and mood boards. Crucially, the portfolio needs to validate solutions through prototyping, testing, and iteration documentation, proving the student can learn from feedback and execute grounded, user-centric solutions, moving beyond mere aesthetics to demonstrate strategic design capability.
The portfolio must also reflect the variety and depth of technical and creative skills acquired across the four-year program. This involves showcasing foundational visual competency in areas like color theory and typography, alongside 2-3 in-depth specialization projects (e.g., a complete app redesign for UX/UI, a functional product model, or a full fashion collection). These major works must prove mastery of industry-standard tools and technical specifications (e.g., technical drawings, material specifications). Finally, the portfolio’s presentation must be highly professional, treating each major project as a concise Design Case Study with a clear narrative, defining the goal, the student’s role, and the measurable impact.
